Romeo & Juliet: Forbidden Love Comes to North Carolina

March 14 - March 17

Presented by Victoria Tucci and directed by Samantha Hirsch, Romeo & Juliet: Forbidden Love Comes to North Carolina opens March 14th at Common Ground Theatre, Durham, NC.

Featuring two women as the ill-fated star-crossed lovers, this gender-bending new production comes as a direct response to North Carolina Amendment SB514 or “Proposition One.” Stating “marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state,” this proposed bill will ban same-gender marriage, prohibit civil unions, and strip domestic partner benefits, among other harms.

The show will serve as an advocacy and education campaign against “Proposition One” by offering post-show talk-backs with the New York cast and illuminate the message of equality through Shakespeare’s text.

“I believe that theatre has the power to change lives,” says producer Victoria Tucci, “in addition to bringing awareness to this anti-LGBT amendment, I have a greater hope that people will see same sex partners as no different as their heterosexual counterparts.”

This is the first production of its kind to debut at Common Ground Theatre. In closing, Tucci remarks, “What better way to make my voice heard and highlight the struggle of so many of my LGBTQ brothers and sisters in North Carolina than to bring the most classic story of forbidden love to my home state?”

The show will be performed at Common Ground Theatre, 4815B Hillsborough Road, Durham, NC from Wednesday, March 14th-Saturday, March 17th.
