Ellen Shepard (Shep) is a published and award winning artist. The May exhibit at the LGBT Center includes paintings from her “Day at the Movies” exhibit where she captures an audience unaware of her lens, as well as her other contemporary portraits. Her paintings are bold and vibrant, telling stories of an experience, often gone untold. She calls her portraits VOPS (Very Odd Portraits) as she sees the world from her point of view. She works in watercolor, acrylic, and pastels. She is also an Assistant Professor of Film at Saint Augustine’s College, as well as a writer, director, and documentary producer. Fatata - La Contessa 1James (Jim) Fatata is a native of North Carolina. He earned an undergraduate degree in 1967 and a Master’s degree in 1969 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed additional postgraduate work in 1989 at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Fatata is an artist who works primarily with clay to create unique, one of a kind, figurative sculptures in the classical style. He artistically interprets and explores the subtle nuances of sculptural forms. His works accurately portray and celebrate human and animal forms that frequently resonate with fantasy-allegorical themes.

Stoneware clay is the material Fatata prefers to work with since it bisque fires to a beautiful pearl-white color. Fired pieces are then painstakingly hand worked to achieve a result that resembles a marble-like, flesh color or faux bronze finish.

Works by Fatata have been juried into numerous art shows and exhibitions and he is available for commissions for those desiring a personal portrait bust or other specific figurative sculpture. In addition to teaching sculpture classes at the Craft Center at North Carolina State University, he manages the Raleigh Sculpture Group that meets weekly at Litmus Gallery & Studios in downtown Raleigh and offers adults, beginners and experienced artists, a unique opportunity to explore their artistic abilities and expand their art experiences through sculpting with clay. Fatata provides instruction that emphasizes basic sculpting techniques and provides assistance and guidance in accurately seeing, and realistically interpreting, human anatomy. Participants create sculptures that are correct in form and proportion. By appointment you can see additional examples of his work by visiting Litmus Gallery & Studios at 312 W. Cabarrus St., Raleigh, NC 27605 and by viewing his work on the web at www.litmusgallery.com.
