I see a lot of young children and some teenagers. I have worked with children who have issues with their sexual identity. I help all clients explore their feelings and help them recognize their inner conflicts and work with them and their family to come to some resolution about choices pertaining to their lifestyle. I have worked with children as young as 5 who were experiencing distress about their gender and have helped them and/or their extended family to come to a peaceful place about their issues.

I’ve read the list of guidelines for working with LGB clients and believe that my practice is in keeping with them. Therefore, I would appreciate being on your referral list. Since I regard specialized knowledge and experience as needed to work with transgender clients, I would not regard myself as an appropriate therapist in such cases.

Doug Jennette, MSW
Licensed Clinical Social Worker

919-781-6393

I am a straight, married (40+ years) psychotherapist and have offered services to individuals and couples in a private practice setting since 1982. Mike Katz, PhD and I have been business partners since 1990. My work with LGBT clients primarily has been with gay men (some of whom are /were married) who often deal with issues of coming out, relationships with partners and children, alienation from/conflict with family, emotional & physical consequences of trauma, poor self esteem/self concept, addiction, or developmental life stage transitions. My style is interactive, reflective, and emotionally focused. And my work is based on the principal that each client’s story has meaning and value and that the seeds for healing and change lie within each of us. I’m available to work with gay and lesbian clients and prefer to forego bisexual or transgender referrals due to lack of therapy experience in those areas.

919-781-0852

I am an out gay therapist with many years of experience with gay and lesbian clients and somewhat less experience with bisexual clients but welcome these referrals. I am particularly interested in issues related to gender and explore these issues frequently with transgender clients as well as the rest of my gay and straight clients. I have no experience working with transgender clients undergoing medical transition and would refer out such a person because there are other therapists more experienced with that. I work mostly with adults in individual therapy, but I enjoy working with high school, college-aged and young adult LGBT clients and again welcome those referrals. I think of myself as skilled with relationship issues in individual or couples therapy, and I am also interested in addiction issues as well as the inevitable struggles with depression, anxiety, fear, self-esteem, and coming out.

In individual counseling I work primarily with anxiety, depression, and the recovery from the impact of early emotional trauma which may cause emotional symptoms and difficulty in maintaining healthy relationships. Currently I work with and want to continue to work with lesbian, gay, bisexual and questioning individuals/couples of all ages. I have knowledge about and sincere interest in working with transgender individuals but have less experience in this area. I am a licensed psychologist in private practice with two primary specializations. First, I specialize in working with individuals who identify as transgendered, transsexual, gender variant or gender non-conforming, including providing therapy and letters for hormone treatment and surgery. I do not consider gender identity, gender expression or sexual orientation to be something that needs to be addressed in therapy. However, there are times when therapy is the appropriate place to address any barriers to living your fullest authentic life. Sometimes these barriers may come from a place of your own anxiety and non-affirming life experiences. Other barriers can come from trying to find your way in an environment that is less than supportive of your decisions. We can also explore the possibility of doing couples or family sessions if you feel that may be helpful for you.

My second specialty in eating disorders, disordered eating and body image issues. I was trained at the UNC-CH Eating Disorders Program. I welcome patients who are struggling to find acceptance and balance in their bodied selves. In addition, I have specialized training in working with individuals on the autism spectrum.

I have more than 25 years of clinical experience, and I still enjoy the art and science of my profession. While I have plenty of experience working with LGB population, I have limited experience with transgendered. With my clinical experience and professional, I use the best of my abilities to provide client centered, positive and growth oriented services to all my clients. I would not assume competency in evaluations for transgender surgery, however, given my clinical experience and assessment/evaluation experience over 25 years, I would feel comfortable providing other services to this population or consultation to professionals.
