St. John's MCC proudly presents a new production of the 1964 political shocker "The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade" by Peter Weiss.
Featuring an original score by nonbinary Durham singer-songwriter al Riggs. This will be staged live and in-person. The French Revolution will not be streamed. Through song, comedy, eroticism, and violence, Peter Weiss's play poses challenging questions about economic oppression, blind patriotism, press censorship, and body autonomy.
As our community has been thrown into tremendous upheaval over the last year, and the #BlackLivesMatter movement has received more public attention than ever, director Dustin Britt has developed a bolder, more defiant production, challenging both the cast and the audience to examine systems of oppression from new angles, highlighting the play's underlying themes of queerness, forced assimilation, imprisonment, religious manipulation, healthcare inequality, white supremacy, and gender inequity.
This production is for Adults only.
Additional Performances: 7/23, 7/24, 7/25, 7/30, 7/31, 8/1, 8/6, 8/7, and 8/8
