ASPYRE2019 Group1

The mission of the A Safer Place for Youth to Reach for Excellence (ASPYRE) Leadership Camp is to empower young members of the LGBTQ community and their allies to achieve personal growth through advocacy and activism while making a positive impact in their communities.

ASPYRE will be focused on how middle and high school students can make a difference in their school or community. Each participant will leave the program with their own project to create change with a written action plan. Youth will build connections with the experienced youth counselors and volunteers along with meeting other young LGBTQ aspiring activists.

The youth will gain an understanding of the diversity and fluidity of the LGBTQ community with an emphasis on policy and problems that specifically affect youth. Additionally ASPYRE aims to help each youth leader to identify their personal values, strengths, and areas for improvement. Through discussions on team building and conflict management the youth will be able to more effectively lead movements to create change. Guest speakers will give presentations on their experiences in activism, which will allow attendees to enhance their own action plans based on lessons learned.

Past guest speakers have included Equality NC, insideOUT, QueerNC, Jacob Tobia, It Gets Better Speakers from Blue Cross Blue Shield's Spectrum group and influential youth activists from across the state.

The approximate total cost per youth is over $250 for the full weekend. Since the center has worked to provide funding from multiple sources for the camp attendees will pay only $25.00. We appreciate your support for this event so we can keep it growing and inspiring more youth leaders. Please donate to the center today to help keep our programs growing!

The camp is a great facility that is centralized and easy to get to off I-85 and I-40. The staff is amazing and takes great care of our attendees over the weekend event. They provide options for any dietary preferences and restrictions. The facility is well maintained with comfortable cabins with climate control, mattresses on the bunks and gender neutral facilities.
