Books in the Library
On a regular basis, a small group of gay men meet in one of our group’s homes or one of our favorite hangouts such as the LGBT Center of Raleigh, usually on the Friday closest to the 15th of the month. We've been doing that since October 2003. We talk about the gay-themed books we’re reading. The books we include are:
- about gay men, how we live our lives, and/or what we do,
- written by a gay man, and/or
- of special interest or appealing to gay men.
Using the same criteria, we include movies, plays, musicals, television shows, art exhibitions, area restaurants, and just about anything else that tickles our fancy. We do not assign one particular book or movie for everyone to read or view.
The idea is to come and share our favorite entertainment with friends – and we do want to include more friends and friends we haven’t met yet. So pick out a book or movie or something you’ve enjoyed. The “review” you give need not be formal. Just tell us your thoughts…. You don’t have to bring the book or video/DVD physically with you, but some of us do.
Even though we, of course, read all kinds of books and watch all kinds of movies, etc., there are other groups in the area for other kinds of literature and entertainment. While our interest is focused, we often talk about many other things that come to mind.
There is absolutely no organization to our group. We don’t have a president. There are no “dues.” We don’t have “meetings” - we call them “gatherings.” Usually, we don’t know where we’re getting together next until the group decides it the month before. And we don’t have a “membership” list. We do have a mailing list of the guys who get our monthly newsletter that explains where we are gathering each month and sometimes recaps what we talked about the last time.
If the idea of this group sounds interesting to you, please write to Jim Manchester. (Along with being on the Web Team for the LGBT Center of Raleigh’s website, he keeps the Group’s mailing list and emails out the newsletter link.)
