Lisa Tobey, who uses she/her pronouns, first became involved with the LGBT Center of Raleigh in 2016. A friend at one of her other volunteer gigs told her about the Center, so she came to an orientation and loved the energy. In a funny twist, it turns out that her friend was talking about somewhere different, but she was already in love with us, so she stayed.
Since that time, Lisa has committed many hours to the Center, not just for staffing, but also for special events, such as Out! Raleigh, where she has served as a lead volunteer for the past two years. Always willing to jump in, she has repeatedly come in to help the Center with everything from addressing envelopes, to volunteering, to using her very spacious car to help us move to our new space.
When asked about Lisa, Kori Hennessey, LGBT Center of Raleigh’s Director of Education and Programs says, “Lisa is one of the most kindhearted, generous, and hardworking volunteers we have had. Not only has she completed hundreds of hours as a regular volunteer, she’s also stepped up to help with just about every event and special project we’ve had. Her willingness to lend a hand to a fellow community member truly shows how remarkable of a person she is.”
When asked what keeps her coming back, Lisa tells us that the people are key. She enjoys being part of this amazing, open, welcoming space. Some of her best memories of the Center are from the quiet times where she makes a personal connection with a guest or another volunteer. “But obviously the most fun is, without a doubt, Out! Raleigh.”
Lisa has three smart, funny, compassionate interesting grown children who are all following their passions. She lives with a cute, very demanding feline companion who showed up on her doorstep and decided to move in. She also loves puzzles, games, escape rooms, theatre, and school. This is all part of her ongoing charm, compassion, and commitment to the Center.
Lisa Tobey continues to be vital to our Community Center. For all she has done over the years, we honor her this year with the Volunteer of the Year Award. Please come and celebrate with Lisa and all her friends at the Fall Achievement Benefit (FAB) on Saturday, October 5th at CAM Raleigh. Tickets to the event are on sale now.
