  • Born and raised on the Canadian border in northern Vermont, Steve was the youngest of 6 children. He moved to Burlington, VT in 1979 to attend college and lived in Vermont until 1999 when work, and a strong desire to get away from cold weather, brought him to Raleigh.

In 1985, Steve started as an accountant at Vermont’s largest public power utility where, in 1995 he became CEO. In this position, he worked to help people who were struggling financially to have more of a voice in the community.

Steve worked with several Vermont LGBTQ organizations including Vermont CARES, Outright Vermont and Vermont Gay Volleyball. He was out at work and took pride in being seen as a gay business person who spoke in front of legislators and community groups to help break down stereotypes.

After moving to Raleigh in 1999, Steve found his work family, and a rewarding career as a VP of Finance and Accounting, with the North Carolina Electric Cooperatives until he retired in 2019.

Steve started volunteering for the LGBT Center of Raleigh in 2013 and joined the Board in 2021. He is committed to helping the Center to thrive and to strive to be one of the leading LGBTQ+ centers in the southeast. While he is delighted to lend his finance and accounting skills to help the Center, his passion is for growing the Center so it can help more marginalized people in the Triangle area.

Steve has lived in Clayton since 1999 and is happily single. He is a dog dad to three rescues who keep him busy and he loves playing tennis, gardening, baking, eating, staying active and being a member of the Board of the LGBT Center of Raleigh.

He shares a vision of social equality and looks forward to providing his support to move our communities towards that vision. Coleman hopes to create safe, accepting spaces and support networks for the community.
